We went to a local pumkin crawl, and got to try out Max's costume for the first time. He is a panda bear this year, although people kept thinking he is a cow... hhhmmmmm.... He doesn't like the hat much, so it's lucky that I got at least one photo. Let's see what happens next weekend.

The Pumpkin Patch
It's been two weeks since Max's surgery, and it's taken him some time to get back to his old self. For the past week, Max has been running a fever, so that's been a bummer for him. We went back to the dr, and they think it's not connected with this surgery, but rather a virus independent from his operation. But for the last two days, he's been fever free and acting quite normal again. Phew!!

Some pictures from the hospital

Before the operation. We had to wait a while as the surgery before us took longer.
The last time he can suck his fingers for a while...
After the operation - poor little dude....
Napping in the hospital. I don't even know what day this was. They all started to blend...

Hugging his new favorite stuffed animal, Papa New Guinea.
Recovering
It's funny to read the last post because we didn't end up leaving the hospital until Fri morning. 3 catheters later, Max finally was able to get his system working again and the drs finally felt fine about releasing us. I am so glad to have the hospital behind us. Even though it's a great place for when your child is sick, it's never fun to have to spend an extended time there.
Max, Carolyn and I had a good weekend. We took lots of walks, ran some errands, and basically took it easy. We did manage to go to a pumpkin patch, which was a lot of fun. Max did great, and continues to love little adventures. We managed his pain through ibuprofen and Tylenol, and he was content and mellow most of the time. Last night, he did have a fever, but he was fever free today, and even had some of his mischievous side back tonight. Let's see how tonight goes.
Carolyn left early this morning, and once again, I don't know what I would have done without her. She made sure to free up everything I had to worry about, so that 100% of my energy could go toward Max. "Hey Car, do you know where my wallet is?" "Why, yes, Jess, it's ..." "Hey Car, did you pack the ...?" "Yes, Jess, I got it!!" She was amazing, and words cannot express how thankful I am to have had her here for so long! Now, it's onward with recovery.

Still in hospital
Max is still doing great, but we're waiting for him to pee on his own before we can go. We spent a second night in the hospital, which was a lot calmer than the first one. He doesn't seem to be in that much pain and we're trying to stay ahead of it. The drs think we should be able to go home by this afternoon. In the meantime, we're singing all sorts of water songs, running the faucet in the bathroom... anything!! :)

Wednesday morning
Max had an o.k. night. He came out of recovery about 9:00 PM, and started crying as soon as he saw me. Poor little buddy.... He settled down, but around 10:30 the regular Oxycontin and Tylenol combo wasn't doing the trick anymore, so we put him on a morphine drip. He was in and out all night. Thankfully, Carolyn stayed in the hospital with us, and that made all the difference. We also had a hospital bed, not a crib this time, which allowed me to lie right next to him. He eventually ended up on top of me, and took little cat naps.
Now it's around 9:30 and he's sleeping again. He doesn't look as swollen as he did after his first surgery, but all of the swelling is on the inside of his mouth this time. We are hoping not to have to spend another night in the hospital and to go home later this afternoon. We'll see, but so far, so good.

Surgery!
Despite doubting that Max would actually get to have this surgery today because he's had a cold, he was healthy enough to proceed. He is being worked on as I type this, with a possible end time in about 3 hours.
I picked up Carolyn from the airport last night - SO great to see her. Because Max wasn't supposed to eat anything after 5AM this morning, I woke him up at 4 and we ate a little waffle, drank some juice, etc. Then we went back to bed. He slept until about 8:00, which was so great! Then we putzed around at home (he took another nap at 10:30), and we were off to the hospital at 11:15.
When we got here, we checked into the surgical unit, where we met with his team, including the anesthesiologist, who cleared him for surgery. Everyone is so nice here and super helpful.
We just got a page from the Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon who put ear tubes into Max's ears. Everything went fine - he had a lot of fluid in his ears, she said so he should be able to hear better now. Hmmmm.... didn't think he wasn't hearing well. :)
So now we are waiting for a progress report from Dr. Birkfeld. He said his part should take about 3 hours, so, in addition to an MRI he's getting, Max should be in recovery by about 7:00.
We are spending one, maybe two nights in the hospital, depending on how fast Max can eat food. We'll see.
